Kolkata Knight Riders’ opener Shubman Gill, during the final against Chennai Super Kings, survived a catch out as the ball hit the cable of the air-bound spider-cam before going into the hands of Ambati Rayudu. Gill was eventually dismissed by Deepak Chahar as CSK won by 27 runs to win IPL 2021. 

In the ninth over of the KKR innings, Gill went for a big slog across the line to Ravindra Jadeja. The ball hit the toe-end of his bat only to rocket in the sky. Raydu managed to take the catch at deep mid-wicket. Gill started walking as MS Dhoni and company celebrated breaking KKR’s then 79-run opening stand. However, the umpire called the batsman back and the delivery was declared a dead ball and Gill survived, The video showed the ball clipping the spider cam.

Shubman Gill was batting at 28 when the incident took place. The opener went on to score 51 runs before Deepak Chahar caught him plumb in front of the wicket with a dipping slower ball low full toss in the 14th over. After his lucky escape in Jadeja’s over, Shubman had hit two consecutive fours.

Chasing 193 runs, KKR could only manage 165/9 in 20 overs. CSK opener Faf du Plessis was named player of the match for playing a magnificent hand of 86 from 59 balls, laced with seven fours and three sixes.

Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer stitched a 91-run stand for the first wicket. The latter scored 50 runs. However, after being 91/1 in the 11th over, KKR slumped to 125 for 8 in the 17th over. For CSK, Shardul Thakur took three wickets while Ravindra Jadeja and Josh Hazlewood got two each.

For KKR, Sunil Narine took two wickets for 26 runs.
