Mexico’s Luis Chavez scored a stunning long-distance freekick against Saudi Arabia in the Group C encounter at Lusail Stadium. The shot by Chavez will undoubtedly go down as one of the best goals of the FIFA World Cup 2022, along with Richarlison’s bicycle kick against Serbia

Mexico are now two goals ahead in the match and it is unlikely that Herve Renard‘s Saudi Arabia will be able to make a comeback in the match and they will be eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2022, as a result.

However, the match is still significant because Mexico and Poland are tied on points and goal differences. If Poland lose the match against Argentina then qualification will boil down to the goal difference. However, if Mexico can score one more goal, then they can skip past Poland and enter the Round of 16.

The match ended in a 2-1 win for Mexico after the Saudis managed to score in added time.

At one point, Mexico had the same goal difference and points as Poland but still faced elimination over fair play rules. They had eight yellow cards as opposed to Poland’s six and according to the new FIFA rules, when a tie like that happens, the team with the least number of yellow cards are granted a berth in knockouts.

This is the first time Mexico has failed to qualify for the Round of 16 in a FIFA World Cup since 1978.
