Lionel Messi’s penalty was saved by Juventus’ Wojciech Szczesny who is on the Polish goal today. The Argentinian talisman failed to give his team a lead in the Group C encounter at the  Education City Stadium.

The incident happened at the 37th minute when Szczesny jumped to defend an Enzo Fernandez cross but ended up hitting an aerial Messi on the face with his hand. The referee did not notice the foul immediately, but he was called over by VAR to have a look.

Upon review, he awarded a penalty to Argentina which Messi took.

This is a big miss by the Argentinian superstar as his country faces elimination in the match, from what is in all probability his final FIFA World Cup campaign. After a loss against Saudi Arabia in the opening fixture, the pressure on the team is immense.

The first half ended goalless, however, Argentina showed a strong attacking intent throughout the match. For the most part, Poland was kept pinned down to their back line with Robert Lewandowski the only one up top for them.

While playing the match, Argentina would have close eye on the Mexico vs Saudi Arabia match also. If Saudi Arabia win that match then they will be able to go through to the Round of 16. In that case, a draw will not be enough for Messi and co.

On the other hand, if the match ends in a draw, Argentina and Poland will go through to the next round.
