The PS5 giveaway was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, but massive groups began gathering in Union Square at 1:30 p.m. The mob began to throw things at 3:30 p.m., and the police started making arrests as a result. News footage from around 4:25 p.m. showed a car departing the scene as people piled onto it, most likely carrying Cenat.

Aerial TV news footage from Friday showed a surging, closely packed crowd mounting park facilities, throwing chairs, punches, and jumping on vehicles. Teenagers shouted, swung things at oncoming cars, and rushed through the streets.

The mob had blocked traffic on many streets, and a significant number of police officers were trying to keep the crowd under control. In reaction to the turmoil, police issued a Level Four mobilization order, which activated all nearby police forces. People in the crowd were given advance notice by police that they would be arrested.

By 5.30 p.m. local time, police had retaken most of the area, but minor clashes continued to occur, with youngsters toppling barricades and hurling bottles and even a flowerpot at police. People were seen being chased down the street by police as they wrestled them to the ground.

By six o’clock, most of the crowd had left, littering the road behind with trash and other waste. The NYPD chief of department, Jeffrey Maddrey, stated without providing specifics or numbers that there had been some arrests and some injuries. A bus departing the area was spotted carrying those who had been detained.

Maddrey claimed that Cenat was taken into prison at the Midtown precinct after police withdrew him from the scene for his own safety and that they are considering whether to file charges against him for inciting.
