Mumbai serves as the home port for the 22nd Missile Vessel Squadron, also referred to as the Indian Navy’s Killers Squadron.
The squadron’s history begins with the Indo-Pak War of 1971, when freshly commissioned Osa I class missile boats from the former USSR took part in Indian Navy operations Operation Trident and Operation Python to damage the Pakistani Navy.
The squadron gained the nickname “Killers” for its accomplishments in the two aforementioned operations, and ever since, it has led India’s naval defence efforts along the Western Seaboard.
The squadron turned 50 in 2021, and Ram Nath Kovind presented it with the President’s Standard in recognition of its national service.
In order to destroy the enemy’s morale, impose a blockade on Karachi, and gain complete sea control, Killer squadron ships set fire to the Karachi harbour on this day, December 8, 1950. The fact that these ships, which were initially bought for shore defence, ended up being the Navy’s most effective offensive strike force in combat, Kovind remarked during the awards ceremony, “symbolises the wit and bravery of our Navy troops.
While conferring the award, the former Indian President also said, “The timing of this award could not have been more befitting as our nation is celebrating ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’. The presentation of the Standard is a testimony to the exceptional service rendered by officers and sailors, past and present, of this squadron to our nation”.
