In the year 1156 AD, Rawal Jaisal established the city of Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer literally translates as Jaisal’s Hill Fort. Because the yellow sandstone used in the construction of the fort, the town below gives off a distinct golden-yellow light. As a result, it is frequently referred to as the “Golden City of India.”
Sandstone with intricate carvings is used to construct many of the homes and temples in the fort and the hamlet below. The town, which is located in the Great Indian Desert’s Thar Desert, has a population of roughly 78,000 people, including those who live in the fort. The Jaisalmer District’s administrative centre I also located there. The city was the former capital of the erstwhile Jaisalmer State.
