UK PM candidate Rishi Sunak opens up about secrets of marriage with wife Akshata Murty

Indian-origin British Prime Ministerial candidate, Rishi Sunak, has opened up about the relationship he shares with his wife, Akshata Murty, in an interview with the Sunday Times. The two met at Stanford University where Sunak was pursuing an MBA degree. Murty, who is the daughter of Indian tech tycoon N. R. Narayana Murthy, married Sunak in 2007.

In his interview, the 42-year-old Sunak said that the success of his marriage is the fact that he and his wife are pretty different people when it comes to things being organized in their household. He said that while he is quite tidy, Murty is “messy” but “spontaneous”. Sunak added, “She is not going to love me for saying this, but I’ll be honest with you, she is not big on the whole tidying thing. She is a total nightmare, clothes everywhere… and shoes… oh God shoes”.

Regarding how their relationship brewed up, Sunak said that he started attending a class just to sit next to Murty. The PM candidate “didn’t really need to take it”, but did so anyway just to be close to his future wife. Sunak also opened up about how he was around when the couple’s daughters, Krishna (11), and Anoushka (9), were growing up.

Sunak said that this was possible since he had his own business then, explaining, “I always say my parenting sweet spot is zero to three and I was really lucky that when they were that age I had the time to just be there a lot and do a lot. I loved every second of it”.

Although opinion polls favour Liz Truss as the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sunak is not losing hope, saying that he will give it a shot with whatever he has. The increasing inflation in post-COVID Britain is set to be one of the key challenges of whoever succeeds Boris Johnson in September.
