Gaurav Gupta, the co-founder of the food delivery services Zomato who quit the organisation on Tuesday, is an engineer and management graduate. He holds an engineering degree from the Indian Institue of Technology (IIT) Delhi and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta.

Gaurav Gupta joined Zomato in 2015 as global head for advertising sales and then was promoted to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) role. As the Zomato COO, Gupta was made in charge of critical operations including content and new initiatives such as their cloud kitchen module, Zomato Infrastructure Services along with sourcing and reviews on the platform

At the time when Zomato scored a massive Rs 9375 crore IPO listing that put the company on the map, Gupta was the company’s point person for the interactions

In March 2019, he was promoted as a co-founder of Zomato with the retention of his position as COO. He left Zomato as the co-founder. Gupta was also leading Zomato’s nutrition wing.

Gupta was the first employee to be promoted to co-founder under the “Zomato Founder Program,” which rewards “people who have contributed to Zomato deeply; have built/scaled businesses.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Gaurav Gupta worked as a consultant with AT Kearney for almost a decade before joining Zomato. In the span of his 6 years at Zomato, he was promoted thrice.

At AT Kearney, he largely headed transformational engagements in consumer industries and retail space, built expertise across new business launch, category performance improvement, sales enhancement, profitability improvement, business due diligence.

Gupta’s additional areas of expertise include growth strategy, strategic sourcing, program management.

Gupta on Tuesday confirmed in one of his blog posts that he has quit Zomato, a company that made headlines with a giant IPO listing in July. 

He wrote that he was taking a new turn in his life and he will be starting a new chapter. He said the last six-year at Zomato defined a chapter of his life.

“We have a great team now to take Zomato forward and it’s time for me to take an alternate path in my journey. I am very emotional as I write this and don’t think any words can do justice to how I am feeling right now,” Gupta said in an internal mail to his colleagues.
