The stage is set for South Carolina‘s governor elections. Joe Cunningham is entering the ring from the Democratic side and is set to be challenged by Republican incumbent Henry McMaster in the midterm polls scheduled for November.

Cunningham, a former lawmaker in the House of Representatives, received more than 56% of the votes on Tuesday to win the Democratic nomination. McMaster, on the other hand, dominated the Republican primary elections and bagged 83.4% of the votes.

Cunningham’s race for the governor’s office is expected to be a complex one. The democrat won’t just be challenging McMaster but his years of experience, large Republican support and the endorsement of former US President Donald Trump.

McMaster, a veteran Republican, has been the governor of South Carolina since 2017. If he wins the upcoming midterm elections, McMaster will become the longest serving governor in the state’s history.

McMaster mostly let his governing do his campaigning, reminding voters how he tried to carefully tailor COVID-19 restrictions when the pandemic started and how the state’s economy is booming while the Democratic administration in Washington struggles with inflation.

What are Cunningham’s chances?

Cunningham is contesting the midterm elections in a largely Republican and conservative state. Moreover, his campaign for the midterms has barely taken off. He received $1.8 million in funds, while his opponent raised roughly $5 million.

He has also taken an electoral approach rarely seen in South Carolina. Cunningham has touted the fact that he is the only Democrat in the state over the past decade to flip a Republican seat in a major race, a win that got him one term in the U.S. House.

He has made big promises, including legalizing recreational marijuana use and sports gambling. The candidate has also repeatedly highlighted the 35-year age gap between him and the governor. Cunningham is 40. McMaster is 75.
