P V Sindhu clinched the Singapore Open title on Sunday by beating China’s Wang Zhi Yi in an intense women’s singles final. This was the Olympic medallist‘s third title in 2022 and her maiden title victory at Singapore Open.

In the thriller, Sindhu managed to stay strong in the key moments to beat 22-year-old Wang  Zhi Yi 21-9, 11-21, 21-15. 

The 27-year-old from Hyderabad finished the first round, which featured scoring 13 points in a row, in 12 minutes. Wang Zhi battled back to draw level as she won the second game. The third round had a tense start before Sindhu gained a five-point lead at the interval. The reigning Asian Championships gold medallist attempted to come back but eventually fell short in the end to lose the game against Sindhu.

This was the Indian’s third title of the season — having won two Super 300 crowns in Syed Modi International and Swiss Open — and an addition to her brimming cabinet which has a gold, two silver and two bronze medals from the World Championships besides two Olympic medals.

The Singapore Open win will be a big boost for Sindhu, who will be leading the Indian charge at the Commonwealth Games, starting July 28 in Birmingham.
