Donald Trump Jr has suggested that his father would be better able to handle the high stakes NATO talks over the Russia-Ukraine war than current US President Joe Biden. 

White House press secretary Jen Psaki has confirmed that Biden is set to meet NATO leaders in Brussels on March 24. He will also attend a European Council summit that has been scheduled to discuss placing further sanctions on Russia and providing humanitarian aid to those affected by the war in Ukraine.

Speaking of Biden’s visit, the former president’s eldest son tweeted “Sending Biden to Europe for “High Stakes” NATO talks will only embolden our enemies further”, adding, “If you want to get something done right send Trump”. 

Notably, Trump had planned to pull the US out of NATO, claiming that other members of the alliance failed to pay the targets set by Trump. The New York Times reported in 2019 that the then-president was unhappy with NATO being a financial drain. 

However, when Russia invaded Ukraine and NATO provided military aid, thus winning applause, Trump attempted to change the narrative.

He said, “I hope everyone is able to remember that it was me, as President of the United States, that got delinquent NATO members to start paying their dues, which amounted to hundreds of billions of dollars”, adding, “Also, it was me that got Ukraine the very effective anti-tank busters (Javelins) when the previous Administration was sending blankets”, Newsweek reported.

It must be noted that President Volodymyr Zelensky was involved in Trump’s impeachment process which uncovered that the Ukrainian president was pressured by Trump to dig up dirt on his political rival, Joe Biden, in exchange for weapons. 

From the time Russia sent troops into Ukraine, Trump has been claiming that Putin wouldn’t have invaded if he were president and has criticized Biden’s handling of the matter. However, the effectiveness of Biden’s sanctions has been acknowledged by Kremlin, which said the Russian economy was hurt.
