US President Joe Biden will deliver his first State of the Union address on Tuesday. The commander-in-chief delivers his annual speech at a time when Russia has invaded Ukraine, challenged the NATO and the West and his administration is being weighed down by public disapproval of his handling of the economy and the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden had last week announced his candidate for an opening on the Supreme Court.

The White House on Tuesday released some excerpts from Biden’s address. The President will slam his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for a “premeditated and unprovoked” war on Ukraine.

“He rejected efforts at diplomacy. He thought the West and NATO wouldn’t respond,” Biden is expected to say.

“And, he thought he could divide us here at home. Putin was wrong. We were ready.”

Biden will “absolutely use the word inflation” and talk about his plans for reducing costs, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. The President will also call on Congress to act on his now-stalled proposals for lowering the cost of child care, elder care and prescription drugs.

He will also explain US’ role in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Biden can also be expected to discuss Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, his nominee for an upcoming opening on the Supreme Court.
