American basketball star Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia was extended for the second time by a Russian court on Tuesday.

31-year-old Griner, who was detained in February, will continue to be held in Russian custody till July 2 at the least, according to a report by Russian state media agency TASS.

Griner was detained back in February near the city of Moscow, when authorities at Sheremetyevo International Airport found vape cartridges containing oil extracted from cannabis in her belongings.

The Women’s National Basketball Association star, who has been in prison for more than three months, could face a maximum sentence of 10 years over the drug charges.

Griner’s detention was extended by a month in May. Back then, her lawyer Alexander Boykov had said that the brief period of extension could be a sign that her case would go to trial sooner than expected.

Now, her detention includes an additional 18 days due to “the request of the investigation,” a Khimki Court representative informed TASS.

Earlier today, the US State Department said that Griner’s Phoenix Mercury teammates had met with officials in order to discuss her release. Her teammates, along with several other WNBA players, have urged US President Joe Biden on social media to help in the case.

A few weeks ago, the Biden administration stated that Griner had been “wrongfully detained by the Russian government,” according to a report by Metro.
