The BAFTA Awards were heavily criticised last year for not nominating female directors and also lacking
diversity in director and actor nominations, featuring mostly white people in
those categories. This year, after introducing a revamped voting and membership
process, the nominations were markedly more diverse.

Winners for eight of
the total 25 category of awards were announced on the opening night on Saturday,
with ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ scoring two wins for Costume Design and Make Up
& Hair. ‘Mank’ picked up the award for Production Design, while Christopher
Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ clinched the BAFTA for Special Effects.
