James McCaffrey, the versatile actor known for his roles as firefighter Jimmy Keefe on “Rescue Me” and the voice of Max Payne in the video game series, has passed away at the age of 65. McCaffrey died at his home in Larchmont, New York, following a battle with myeloma, as confirmed by his wife, actress Rochelle Boström.

In addition to his acclaimed portrayal of Jimmy Keefe, a 9/11 victim, on the FX drama “Rescue Me,” McCaffrey made significant contributions to the entertainment world. He lent his voice to the iconic character Max Payne in the video game series, depicting the avenging former NYPD officer turned DEA agent. Despite admitting not being a fan of video games, McCaffrey’s work in the Max Payne series earned praise for his compelling voice acting.
McCaffrey’s television credits also include roles on the NBC drama “Viper,” where he played expert driver Michael Payton/Joe Astor, and the Fox crime series “New York Undercover,” where he portrayed Capt. Arthur O’Byrne.
Born and raised in Albany, New York, McCaffrey was a member of The Actors Studio since 1987 and established his theater company, The Workhouse Theatre, in Tribeca. His diverse career spanned television, film, and video games, with appearances in popular shows like “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Madam Secretary,” “Jessica Jones,” and “Blue Bloods.”
