With 89,706 new COVID-19 cases and 1,115 deaths in the last 24 hours, India’s coronavirus tally has shot to 4,370,129 with 73,890 deaths. India now has the fastest-growing daily COVID-19 caseload in the world. The country has 897,394 active cases as of now, Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday morning.

A total of 3,398,845 patients have recovered from the infection so far.

The Indian Council of Medical Research said, that 51,804,677 samples were tested up to September 8 and of these 1,154,549 samples were tested on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Centre on Tuesday said that schools can partially reopen on a voluntary basis for Classes 9 to 12 from September 21. However, online and distance learning will continue to be permitted and encouraged, a Statement of Protocol issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

On Monday, with a further increase in cases, the country surpassed Brazil to become the second worst-hit country globally. While the US has reported over 6.51 million COVID-19 cases with over 194,000 deaths, Brazil has reported over 4.16 million COVID-19 cases and over 127,000 deaths.

The global COVID-19 cases zoomed past 27.7 million. More than 9.01 lakh people have died due to the infection so far.
