Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah left the English bowlers frustrated as they stitched together a solid 89-run ninth-wicket partnership to put India in the driver’s seat on the fifth and final day of the second Test against England at Lord’s.
Their gritty partnership saw them pass the previous 9th-wicket Indian record of Kapil Dev and Madan Lal (66 runs) at the same venue back in 1982.
India declared on 298/8, setting England a target of 272 runs to win the second Test match. As the Indian innings was declared, Mohammed Shami remained unbeaten on 56* off 70 balls and Bumrah remained unbeaten on 34* off 64 balls.
During his stay in the middle, Shami hit six boundaries and a solitary six. He also exhibited a strike rate of 80.00. Bumrah, on the other hand, got three boundaries in his kitty and exhibited a strike rate of 53.12.
Their partnership was widely acknowledged and lauded by both the analysts and fans.
“I like it, I like it a lot,” former India cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar said on air.
“Waah ! Mazaa aa gaya. What a wonderful partnership between Shami and Bumrah. They may not have the best of techniques but from experience i Can say that bowlers have a big heart,” former India batsman VVS Laxman tweeted.
Cricket expert and Ayaz Menon said: “Tailenders Shami-Bumrah in the best partnership of the innings: clever, gritty and also positive.”
Virat Kohli, in the Lord’s balcony, too enjoyed his bowlers’ batting performance. The two cricketers received a hero’s welcome as they came back to the dressing room after the end of the first session.
The highlight of Shami’s batting was the aggression with which he batted. And also hit a towering six off Moeen Ali’s bowling to notch up his second Test fifty.
Bumrah, on the other hand, was more about defence. With the England cricket team captain spreading the field in anticipation of aerial shots by the Indian tail-enders, the duo of Shami-Bumrah took advantage of the field placements and milked the singles with ease.
