The%20Asaduddin%20Owaisi-led%20AIMIM%20was%20one%20of%20the%20major%20gainers%20in%20the%20Bihar%20assembly%20elections.%20The%20party%20made%20a%20big%20impact%2C%20winning%205%20of%20the%2016%20seats%20it%20had%20contested%20in%20these%20elections.%20All%20the%20five%20seats%20for%20the%20party%20came%20from%20the%20Seemanchal%20region%2C%20where%20the%20minorities%20have%20a%20sizable%20vote%20and%20wield%20considerable%20political%20weight.%20The%20AIMIM%u2019s%20performance%20also%20put%20paid%20to%20the%20Mahagathbandhan%u2019s%20chances%20of%20forming%20the%20government%20and%20repeating%20its%20performance%20in%20the%202015%20assembly%20elections%2C%20when%20it%20had%20won%2014%20seats%20from%20the%20region.%20%26nbsp%3B

The%20AIMIM%20was%20a%20part%20of%20the%20six-party%20alliance%20led%20by%20Upendra%20Kushwaha%27s%20Rashtriya%20Lok%20Samta%20Party%20and%20the%20BSP.%20Despite%20its%20remarkable%20showing%2C%20the%20AIMIM%20was%20unable%20to%20retain%20the%20Kishanganj%20assembly%20seat%20that%20it%20had%20won%20in%20a%20by-election.%20During%20the%202015%20elections%2C%20the%20grand%20alliance%20had%20won%2014%20of%20the%2024%20seats%20from%20the%20Seemanchal%20region.%20This%20time%2C%20the%20AIMIM%u2019s%20success%20has%20come%20primarily%20at%20the%20expense%20of%20the%20Congress%2C%20the%20RJD%2C%20and%20the%20JD%28U%29.%20It%20defeated%20the%20Congress%20in%20both%20Armour%20and%20Bahadur%20Gana%2C%20wrested%20Baisi%20and%20Jokihat%20from%20RJD%2C%20and%20Kochadhaman%20seat%20from%20JD%28U%29.%20%26nbsp%3B

Owaisi%u2019s%20high%20voltage%20campaign%20in%20this%20election%20has%20led%20to%20the%20Congress%20and%20another%20of%20the%20constituents%20of%20the%20Mahagathbandhan%20accusing%20him%20of%20being%20a%20vote-cutter%20and%20of%20helping%20the%20BJP.%20His%20response%20was%20that%20%u201CThis%20is%20an%20absolutely%20baseless%20argument.%20Wherever%20they%20fail%2C%20they%20blame%20me%20for%20it.%20One%20of%20the%20senior-most%20leaders%20of%20the%20RJD%2C%20Abdul%20Bari%20Siddiqui%2C%20has%20lost%20from%20a%20constituency%20where%20I%20did%20not%20even%20put%20up%20a%20candidate.%20Now%2C%20is%20this%20my%20fault%3F%u201D%20asks%20Owaisi.%20Vehemently%20defending%20his%20right%20to%20contest%20the%20Bihar%20polls%2C%20the%20AIMIM%20chief%20says%20he%20did%20it%20to%20ensure%20that%20Muslims%20do%20not%20lose%20faith%20in%20the%20democratic%20system.%20%u201CThese%20so-called%20secular%20parties%20have%20all%20along%20treated%20them%20as%20hostages.%20We%20provided%20them%20a%20viable%20alternative%20and%20a%20democratic%20avenue%20to%20fulfill%20their%20aspirations%2C%u201D%20the%20AIMIM%20chief%20told%20Opoyi.%20%26nbsp%3B

Buoyed%20by%20his%20success%20in%20Bihar%2C%20Owaisi%20has%20now%20set%20his%20sights%20on%20Bengal%2C%20a%20state%20that%20goes%20to%20the%20polls%20next%20year.%20%u201CI%20have%20every%20intention%20of%20contesting%20the%20election%20in%20Bengal%2C%20and%20will%20try%20to%20provide%20the%20people%20there%20with%20an%20opportunity%20to%20get%20out%20of%20the%20clutches%20of%20those%20who%20have%20all%20along%20used%20them%20as%20a%20vote%20bank%2C%u201D%20he%20claims.%20The%20BJP%20is%20breathing%20down%20the%20Trinamool%20Congress%u2019s%20neck%20in%20Bengal%20and%20has%20accused%20it%20of%20appeasing%20the%20minorities%20at%20the%20expense%20of%20the%20majority%20community.%20The%20state%20has%20a%20sizeable%20Muslim%20population%20on%20which%20Mamata%20Banerjee%u2019s%20party%20is%20banking%20heavily%20for%20support%20as%20it%20battles%20to%20regain%20power%20in%20the%20state%20for%20the%20third%20consecutive%20term.%20%26nbsp%3B

It%20will%20be%20interesting%20to%20note%20if%20Owaisi%20succeeds%20in%20tying%20up%20with%20the%20BSP%20also%20in%20UP.%20%26nbsp%3BIn%20addition%20to%20Bihar%2C%20the%20AIMIM%20has%20been%20trying%20to%20gain%20a%20foothold%20in%20UP.%20An%20alliance%20between%20the%20two%20parties%20is%20expected%20to%20get%20a%20fair%20amount%20of%20traction%2C%20besides%20making%20a%20big%20dent%20in%20the%20SP%u2019s%20minority%20votes.
