Adityanath was a five-term Lok Sabha member from Gorakhpur and, along with Maurya, is currently a member of the state’s Legislative Council.

“The BJP has provided welfare and sensitive governance in Uttar Pradesh in the last five years. We are confident that the people of UP will again bless us in this great festival of 2022 with the same clarity,” the BJP tweeted quoting Pradhan.

Elections for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly is scheduled to be held in seven phases starting from February 10. Counting of votes will be held on March 10.

Polling for Adityanath’s seat will be held on March 3, the penultimate phase of the election. There were reports that the Chief Minister could contest the polls from either of the two temple towns – Mathura or Ayodhya.

“The decision has been made after much deliberation, the final decision (was taken) by the top leadership of the party. Yogiji said ‘I will contest from any seat party asks me to’, This was the party’s decision” Pradhan said.

The BJP won 87 out of the 107 seats that it announced candidates for in 2017. The ruling party will announce candidates for the remaining 296 seats later.
