The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday informed that the well-marked low-pressure area over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify as cyclonic storm Nivar in the next 24 hours.

“The well marked low pressure area over southwest & adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal persists. It is very likely to concentrate into a depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal during next 06 hours and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours,” IMD said in a tweet.

The weather agency had forecast that the storm could cause rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala from November 23. “It’s likely to cross between Karaikal & Mamallapuram by Nov 25 afternoon,” IMD Deputy Director of General Manager S Balachandran told ANI on Monday.

IMD also said that a cyclonic storm named ‘GATI’ over the southwest Arabian Sea has moved westwards.

“The very severe cyclonic storm “GATI” over southwest Arabian Sea moved nearly westwards with a speed of about 18 kmph during past 06 hours and crossed north Somalia coast near latitude 10.40N around 2030 hrs IST,” IMD tweeted.

GATI is the strongest tropical cyclone ever measured in the northern Indian Ocean has made its landfall in east Africa, where it is poised to drop two years’ worth of rain in the next two days.
