Facebook, Google, and Twitter have blocked or taken down all the links that incorrectly showed photos of a deceased woman as that of the Hathras gangrape case victim, the social media platforms told the Delhi High Court on Thursday, reports PTI.
The high court on November 23, 2020, had directed all the social media platforms to remove all those links, which showed the deceased woman as the rape victim. The three platforms submitted their response before Justice Prathiba M Singh.
The demand was made in connection with the gangrape case of a 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was allegedly raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras by four men. The woman died two weeks after the incident in a hospital in Delhi.

“A victim cannot go on searching for links and making complaints. There has to be some other solution,” the Delhi High Court had said in order after a plea was filed by a man who had said the pictures of his deceased wife are circulated on social media sites wrongly depicting her as the Hathras gangrape case victim, reports PTI.
However, the husband during the hearing on Thursday said not all links with objectionable content have been removed by Facebook and sought time to place on record the existing links and URLs. The high court, hence, has given him time till April 12 to place on records the links and URLs that have not been removed, reports PTI.

The man also said that even otherwise too, the revelation of the identity of a rape victim is an offence under the Indian Penal Code, though in the present matter image of a wrong person is in circulation.
