Amid the ongoing rift in the Punjab Congress unit, the AICC called a meeting of the state’s Congress Legislative Party on Saturday. As per reports, Amarinder Singh, who is facing renewed trouble from other state leaders has told Congress chief Sonia Gandhi that he can’t continue in the party with this kind of humiliation.

In a tweet on Friday, AICC general secretary and in-charge of Punjab affairs Harish Rawat announced the meeting, tagging  Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

This is the third time that state Congress leaders have revolted against the ‘Captain’. Last month, four ministers and around two dozen party legislators had raised a banner against Amarinder Singh saying they had no faith in his ability to honour unfulfilled promises.

“This kind of humiliation is enough, this is happening for the third time. I can’t continue to stay in the party with this kind of humiliation,” NDTV’s sources quoted Amarinder Singh.

Sidhu on Twitters aid, “As per the AICC directive, Congress Legislative Party meeting has been convened at @INCPunjab PPCC Office, Chandigarh on 18 September 2021 (Saturday) 5 PM.”

The meeting of Punjab’s MLAs, to take a decision on the leadership, comes months ahead of state polls. The Punjab Assembly has 117 seats and the Congress has 80 legislators in the House.

In August, the Congress made it clear that the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab will be fought under the leadership of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. “The MLAs have said that they have full confidence in the party and the high command. I will speak to the people concerned about their grievances and, if needed, to the party high command. We should work together for the party. If there is already some damage done, we will try to find a solution to it,” the party had said.

However, it took only one more month for the Punjab leaders in the Sindhu camp to approach Congress top-brass again, demanding for a change in the Punjab leadership.
