Often in news for her provocative tweets, actor
Kangana Ranaut on Wednesday again picked a bone through a video in which she lambasted Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government for arresting Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami, hailing him
as a free speech martyr.
Goswami, the editor-in-chief of Republic TV
channel, was arrested by Raigad Police on Wednesday morning over a case of
abetment to suicide. The case goes back to 2018, when an architect committed
suicide in Alibaug in Raigad district citing financial troubles. In his suicide letter, the architect named
Goswami as one of the persons who owed him money.
“Today you went to Arnab Goswami’s house, you assaulted him, you pulled his hair. I want to ask Maharashtra government, how many houses will you
break into, how many voices will you stifle, how many throats will you throttle,”
Ranaut said in a video she posted on her Twitter account.
She went on to compare Goswami to free speech champions in
the past who faced government crackdown for their outspokenness. She also
insinuated that the Maharashtra government was working at the behest of the
Congress party in a vindictive political play.
“’Sonia Sena’, how many mouths will you shut? These mouths
will only increase in numbers. Many patriots were hanged even in the past… so be it, you stifle
one voice, there will be many more voices,” she said.
“And why do you get angry? Does it anger you, if someone
calls you penguin? If you look like a penguin
so people will call you penguin. Does it anger you when someone calls you pappu
sena…? Sonia Sena…? You are Sonia Sena”
The editor’s arrest divided people on social media, with
some accusing Maharashtra government of abuse of power and others justifying the arrest.
