West Bengal saw the battle for Nandigram heat up during the second phase of the eight-phase elections for assemblies of five states on April 1. A total of 69 (30 in Bengal and 39 in Assam) seats are voting to decide the fate of 516 candidates. However, all eyes are on Nandigram, the biggest prize of this election, where West Bengal CM Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is pitted against former aide Suvendu Adhikari, who is in BJP now.
With the voting underway, both the candidates are trading barbs, hoping to woo the voters and win the seat. While Mamata is pulling all stops and alleging violence and vote-rigging in Nandigram, Suvendu said that she (Mamata) has lost Nandigram.
“We have already lodged 63 complaints with Election Commission. I am not worried about Nandigram, but I am worried about democracy. I will win Nandigram with the blessings of ‘Maa Maati Manush’,” news agency ANI quoted the Bengal CM as saying.
“Whatever you (Election Commission) try, BJP will not win. In Nandigram, 90% of the votes will go to TMC,” the Trinamool Congress leader added.
Earlier, the Bengal CM dialed Governor Jagdeep Dhankar and said that goons from other states are creating ruckus in Nandigram by not allowing locals to cast their vote.
“From morning I am campaigning and I am not getting any result. Now I am appealing to you, please see,” Mamata was heard telling Dhankar in a video uploaded by ANI.

“I am showing you ‘V’ for victory sign. I’m sorry Election Commission & Amit Shah, please control your goons who are heckling woman journalists in rallies. I can’t reveal what I discussed with Observer&Gov, it’s confidential. I haven’t seen such a bad election,” the Trinamool Supremo had earlier said in the day.
However, when she was asked if any steps will be taken on the allegations of booth rigging, Mamata said that they will check all footage of the polling booth and take appropriate steps.
