Meerut Cantt was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it swept Uttar Pradesh in the 2017 assembly elections. The BJP’s Satya Prakash Agarwal had won Meerut Cantt defeating Satendra Solanki of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) by a margin of 76,619 votes.

The large margin of votes reflects the BJP’s complete sway in the constituency – the party has been winning the Meerut Cantt seat without break since 1989.  Satya Paraksh Agarwal has been the BJP MLA from the constituency since 2002.

Meerut Cantt. or Cantonment is one of five assembly constituencies in the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency. The BJP’s Rajendra Agarwal is the Member of Parliament (MP) from Meerut, a seat he has won since 2009.

The BJP is looking for a second straight term for chief minister Yogi Adityanath in this year’s assembly election. It had won 312 seats in 2017 in a power-packed performance, but even a 100 less seats will give it the majority it needs in the 403-seat UP assembly to form the government.

The Samajwadi Party is seen as the BJP’s chief rival in the elections beginning in February 2022, with its leader Akhilesh Yadav attempting to wrest back the state he lost five years ago. Yadav was UP chief minister after his party won the 2012 assembly elections.
