Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha on Thursday were lathicharged by police in West Bengal as they tried to reach the secretariat ‘Nabanna’ in Howrah to protest the alleged murder of workers in the state.

West Bengal Police used tear gas, water cannon on BJP workers at Howrah’s Santragachi during saffron party’s ‘March to Nabanna’, PTI reported.

Thousands of BJP workers from Kolkata and Howrah began marching towards Nabanna to protest the “worsening” law and order in the state. They also resorted to baton-charge in Hastings area in Kolkata.

The defensive measures of the police resulted in BJP state vice- president Raju Banerjee and MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato getting injured.

BJP leader Locket Chatterjee told ANI, “Police is lathi charging our people…Stone-pelting being done from Khidirpur side. Can’t the police see that?”

The ruling Trinamool Congress party on Wednesday denied permission to the march and said that this cannot be organised under the Pandemic Act. The government stated that democratic rallies within “permissible parameters” of only 100 participants will be allowed.
