Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan, on Thursday, filed a petition before the Supreme Court of India seeking review of its August 31 judgment, that sentenced him with a fine of Re 1 in the contempt case for his tweets on the judiciary, ANI reported.
On August 31, Bhushan was directed to deposit a Re 1 fine with the Supreme Court registry by September 15, with failure to do so entailing a three-month jail term and debarment from the law for three years. Bhushan had later deposited the symbolic fine.
Tweeting two photos soon after the top court verdict, Bhushan wrote, “My lawyer and senior colleague Rajiv Dhavan contributed 1 Re immediately after the contempt judgement today which I gratefully accepted.”
Bhushan was held guilty of contempt of court on August 14. The case is related to two tweets posted by Bhushan on June 27 and 29. While the first one talked about an undeclared emergency and the role of the Supreme Court, the second was regarding Chief Justice SA Bobde, who was photographed trying a Harley Davidson superbike in his hometown Nagpur, during the coronavirus lockdown.
The top court also referred to a 2009 contempt case against the senior advocate.
