Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary, 19, after topping in the 10 m air pistol qualification, failed to give a repeat performance as he finished in 7th position in the final in 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

The teenage shooter shot 137.4 to be eliminated in the seventh place. This comes after an hour after topping the qualifications with a solid performance at the Asaka Range.

Saurabh failed to get a solid start and was placed 8th in the standing after the first five shots, with a score of 47.7.

The Asian Games and Youth Olympics gold-medallist was positioned sixth after the 12th shot, with a score of 117.2.

The 19-year-old managed to survive the first elimination round but could not keep going owing to a poor start.

Earlier, he had fired his way into the final by topping the qualifications as he accumulated a total of 586 points, including a perfect 100 in his fourth series.

The other Indian in the fray, Abhishek Verma, failed to make it past the qualification round after he finished 17th with 575 points. He was in contention to make the cut but quickly lost his position after scoring 8s in his last two hits.

Saurabh was appearing in his maiden Olympics.

In the qualification, the teenager rallied from 19th place to inch closer to the top 8. He was competing in a field of 36.

Once inside the safe zone, Chaudhary continued with his form and scored a perfect 100 with a 10 out of 10 after back-to-back 98s, making his way up to the top.

Korean legend and four-time Olympic champion Jin Jin Jongoh could not make the finals.

As for the winners, Iran’s Javad Foroughi won the gold medal by accumulating 244.8 points. Damir Mikec took home the silver medal after recording a total score 237.9 and Wei Pang of China settled for the bronze medal as he finished with a total score of 217.6.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics began on Friday, July 23, with a watered-down opening ceremony.
