Iconic wrestler Adrian Street Adrian Street has died at the age of 82 after undergoing brain surgery at at the Grange University Hospital.
His death was confirmed by his family on Monday. Street, who had more than 12,000 fights throughout his career, was known his flamboyant appearance and courageous fighting style in the 1970s and ’80s.
Perhaps hailed as one of the most famous fights of his career, Street faced Jimmy Savile, a British DJ and television and radio personality who was later convicted of pedophilia. The fight took place in 1971 where Savile was beaten black and blue by Street.

He said: “The promoters were trying to put Savile across as a bit of a tough guy. But I was having none of it. I kicked his legs from underneath him, then I picked him up by his hair, held him upside down and dropped him on his skull. Then when I looked down at my hands, I realized they were covered in hair – Savile’s. I’d torn huge clumps out of his scalp.”
At the time, Street had no clue about Savile’s crimes which would surface later. Street said that at the time that Savile used to brag about his sex life.

He explained: “All the fighters on the circuit used to boast about their conquests. But Savile used to go on and on about the young girls who’d wait in line for him outside his dressing room. He’d pick the ones he wanted and say to the rest: ‘Unlucky, come back again tomorrow night.’ Had I known then what I know about him now, I’d have given him an even bigger hiding.”
Street was a grandfather-of-five who survived cancer in 2001. However, he developed a host of other health complications in the recent years including a heart problem. He also recently suffered a stroke which led to a bleed on the brain.
