Emma Raducanu, 18, ended Britain’s 44-year-wait for a major Grand Slam when she lifted the women’s singles US Open title at Flushing Meadows on September 11. En route to her championship, she beat her opponent Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
“You say, ‘I want to win a Grand Slam.’ But to have the belief I did, and actually executing, winning a Grand Slam, I can’t believe it,” Emma said.
In an interview with BBC, Emma talked about her love for frozen yogurt, the Queen’s note to her and how she is ready for everything that comes next.
“I’ve got no idea what is going on, not at all. I’ve got no clue. But anything that comes my way, I’m ready to deal with it. And I’ve got great people around me to take me through these moments and they got me here and yeah, I’m very excited to celebrate with them later and also go home and see everyone back home,” Emma told BBC.
Talking about the Queen’s message, the women’s singles US Open champion said: “It meant everything to get a message from her Majesty, I mean, she is such a great inspiration and role model for the whole country so to have a note from her, I was extremely honoured and very, very grateful that she took notice of my tennis. I mean I can’t believe it, I’m maybe going to frame the letter or something.”
In an earlier interview, Emma had professed love for frozen yogurt. So when she was asked what is the flavour of the championship, Emma said that the flavour doesn’t change. “I mean, it’s chocolate, with more chocolate and some chocolate brownie. I mean, I’m one of those,” she quipped.
As for the championship, she is the female qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final, let alone win one. She won 10 matches in a row at Flushing Meadows — three in qualifying, seven in the main draw — and is the first woman to win the US Open title without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014.
