Arsenal were not favourites when the 2022-23 season kicked off. However, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard’s form led their campaign. Before the international break in March, Mikel Arteta and co were dominating and set to win the club’s first English top-tier title since 2003.

However, they slipped in April. The momentum and confidence is gone. Arsenal drew against Liverpool (2-2) and West Ham (2-2) before hosting Southampton on Friday.

The Southampton game saw Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale make a blunder in the first 30 seconds to gift Carlos Alcaraz an early goal. Theo Walcott found the back of the net in the 14th minute before Gabriel Martinelli hit one back.

Southampton led 2-1 at half-time.

Croatia’s Duje Ćaleta-Car gave the visitors a big lead in the second half to take it to 3-1. However, Odegaard (88th) and Saka (90th) scored in the final minutes to draw the game.

Are the Gunners fans happy after the draw? No, not even a bit.

Fans trolled the team for dropping points in a third consecutive game, especially when their Premier League title was at stake.

“When you are finally in stable relationship, Arsenals decides you must be heartbroken anyway,” a Twitter user said.

“Arsenal players at the end of season after going trophyless again: Maybe the real trophy is the friends we made along the way,” a third one said on Twitter.

Now, Arsenal have not won at the Etihad since January 2015. City have two games in hand and trail them by four points. With Erling Haaland in great touch, the hosts will be favourites on April 27.
