Sergio Aguero joined Argentina’s celebrations at the Lusail Stadium after they won the FIFA World Cup 2022 beating France in penalties. A former player, Aguero was not part of the Argentine squad for the Qatar World Cup, yet he lifted the trophy.

According to FIFA rules, only players and managers from the winning team, the heads of state, and the FIFA president are allowed to touch the trophy. It is made entirely of gold and is estimated to cost around $20 million.

What consequence will he face for touching the trophy? Well, it is unlikely that he will face any. Back in 2014, pop star Rihanna also kissed the World Cup trophy while she was performing at the closing ceremony. Everyone called it a breach of etiquette by the pop star. However, she did not face any consequences from FIFA.
Sergio Aguero was a pivotal part of the Argentine football team over the years. He was an active professional in football till 2021 when he was diagnosed with a heart problem that forced him to hang his boots prematurely.
If that had not been the case, then he would have been a veteran in the 2022 World Cup-winning squad for Argentina.
However, unlike Rihanna, he is a former player and the FIFA rules will apply more to him that perhaps to Rihanna. As a result, FIFA may later decide to fine or ban the former Argentina striker from tournaments. But there is no doubt that he deserved to lift the WC trophy with his former teammate.
