Lionel Messi, the Argentina captain, is on a dream run ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In his club PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Nice, the legendary forward netted a stunning goal from a spot kick that took his all-time freekick goal count to 60. He is now the active player with the most freekick goals.

Messi has been in fine form this season. Just before the league matches resumed, the former Barcelona star played an instrumental role in friendly matches Argentina played against Honduras and Jamaica, respectively. While he scored a beautiful chip against Honduras, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner came on as a substitute against Jamaica and ended up scoring one stunner from the edge of the box and quickly followed it up with a freekick strike.

The talismanic forward’s form will be crucial for Argentina if they are to have any chance of picking up football’s most coveted prize, come November. Messi’s status as the greatest player to have ever played the game hinges on whether he manages to get his hands on the World Cup trophy, something he came very close to in 2014. Argentina are currently on a 35-game unbeaten run, the highest in their history, and pundits have already named them favourites to win the global tournament this year.
PSG are also having a spectacular run in the domestic league thanks to the spectacular forms Messi, Neymar Jr., as well as Kylian Mbappe are in. They have not lost a single match out of the nine league games they have played this season.
