In the latest switcheroo following the NBA Draft 2021, the Oklahoma City Thunder acquired forward Derrick Favors and a future first-round draft pick from the Utah Jazz in exchange for a 2027 second-round draft pick and cash considerations, the team announced on Friday.
Although the rumours of the trade deal were doing the rounds following the completion of the draft, the official announcement wasn’t made until Friday morning. It was announced today by Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti.

Reportedly, Jazz agreed to the deal to extend their financial flexibility although it would be a tough pill to swallow for the team to lose their star centre. The move saves them roughly around $40 million.
In the drafts, Jazz picked Jared Butler from Baylor who is arguably a top-ten protected pick and is slated to have a high ceiling. The move also gives the Jazz a trade exception that could help in roster building this offseason.
Meanwhile, for Oklahoma, this could be a tasty signing as Favors has crucial for the Jazz. He also has a great locker room presence and will provide some much-needed veteran mentorship.
However, Favors’ journey with the Thunder hasn’t always been flowery. His tenure and the franchise has been hampered by lingering injuries over the years.

The 30-year-old (6-10, 265) has appeared in 751 games with the Jazz, Nets and Pelicans and holds career averages of 10.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.23 blocks in 24.7 minutes per game.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma added in their official statement, “the 2027 second-round pick the Thunder is trading to Utah is the least favorable of Oklahoma City’s four second-round picks.”
This is a deal that could benefit both parties as Jazz will achieve the much needed financial flexibility, while Oklahoma will get an experienced baller who can keep an instant impact.
