NBA outfit Orlando Magic have roped in former Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Jamahl Mosley as the new head coach for the struggling team. Magic parted ways with their head coach Steve Clifford in June after failing to make the playoffs for the 2020-21 season.
The club confirmed the news of Mosley’s appointment through a statement on Sunday.
“We would like to welcome Jamahl and his family to the Magic family,” AFP quoted a statement from Orlando Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman as saying.
“Within the NBA coaching community, Jamahl is considered a rising star. His coaching path is rooted in player development. He is a communicator and connector, and we look forward to him leading our group,” the statement added.
Mosley has been associated with the Mavericks as an assistant coach for the previous seven seasons, helping them reach the playoffs four times while he was with the club. He has also served as the head coach of the Mavericks’ Summer League team. Before he joined the Dallas outfit, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He also has five seasons of experience with the Denver Nuggets, where he worked in the player development and scouting department before becoming an assistant coach.
In Dallas, Mosley has worked closely with rising start guard Luka Doncic.
After Mosley replaced quarantined Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle on the bench during a victory over the New York Knicks in April, Doncic had heaped praises on him, saying that Mosley has “got the things needed for a head coach.”
