A Kortney Hause header sealed Aston Villa‘s first Premier League win against Manchester United at Old Trafford since 2009 on Saturday, with Bruno Fernandes blowing a late chance to equalise from the spot.

Hause was the hero for the Villians as he rose above Edinson Cavani to score in the 88th minute from a corner delivery by Douglas Luiz. The goal sent the away fans into frenzy with manager Dean Smith hugging his set-piece coach in frantic touchline celebrations.

This was Villa’s first win at Old Trafford since December 2009, when Gabriel Agbonlahor scored in a 1-0 win.

However, Hause was the culprit minutes later, as he handled the ball inside the box to prevent a cross from Fernandes from entering the danger zone.

United, who have won the most points from losing positions since the start of the 2020-21 season, were on the verge of salvaging another as the reliable Fernandes set himself up to take the spot kick ahead of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo

However, the Portuguese midfielder blasted the penalty over the bar to send it deep into Stretford End to seal three points for the Midlands club.

United registered a total of 28 shots but only four of them were on target, summing up another inefficient outing in front of goal for the record Premier League champions.

The loss was United’s first of the Premier League season and second in a row in all competitons after losing to West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. They also lost their Champions League opener against BSC Young Boys on September 14.

Another blow to United came in the form of injuries to defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw ahead of their next European outing, against Villarreal on Wednesday. Shaw was forced off just after the half hour mark and was replaced by Diogo Dalot, with Maguire making way for Victor Lindelof just after the hour mark.
