In preparation for their College World Series matchup against No. 5 seed LSU on Saturday, the Vols are in Omaha, Nebraska.

Even though the Vols and Tigers have never faced off in the College World Series, LSU is a familiar rival for the Vols. LSU has prevailed in 69 of the last 90 meetings. In Knoxville, Baton Rouge, and even on neutral grounds, the Tigers outperform the Vols.

When the two teams last faced off in April in Baton Rouge, LSU came out on top.

How does the College World Series work?

The College World Series is the culmination of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, where the top college baseball teams in the United States compete for the national title. Here’s an overview of how the College World Series works:

Selection Process-

Regional Tournaments: At the conclusion of the regular season, 64 teams are selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament. These teams are divided into 16 regional tournaments, with four teams assigned to each regional.

Super Regionals: The 16 winners of the regional tournaments then advance to the Super Regionals, which are best-of-three series. The eight winners of the Super Regionals move on to the College World Series.

College World Series Format:

Omaha, Nebraska: The College World Series takes place in Omaha, Nebraska, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 24,000 spectators and has been the home of the College World Series since 2011.

Double Elimination: The College World Series features an eight-team, double-elimination format. The teams are split into two brackets of four teams each, referred to as the winners’ bracket and the elimination bracket.

Bracket Play: The tournament begins with two four-team brackets playing against each other. Each team plays a minimum of two games in the bracket stage. If a team loses two games, they are eliminated from the tournament.

Championship Series: The winners of each bracket then face off in a best-of-three Championship Series to determine the national champion. The team from the winners’ bracket has an advantage in that they only need to win one of the three games to claim the title. The Championship Series determines the overall winner of the College World Series.

National Champion: The team that wins the Championship Series is crowned the national champion of NCAA Division I Baseball.
