In the women’s Olympic football semifinal, Canada on Monday stunned world champions United States to set up a summit clash against Sweden on Friday. Canada defeated the US 1-0 in the semifinal.

Sweden won 1-0 against Australia riding on a 46th-minute goal from Friolina Rolfo. The European side had won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and would look to defeat Canada and win the gold this time.

The Canada women’s football team registered their first win against their American counterparts. The solitary goal in the match was scored by Jessie Fleming in the 75th minute off a penalty.

The game till then, had been even till then. The penalty was a result of US defender Tierna Davidson challenging Deanne Rose on the edge of the penalty area. Canada was awarded a penalty after a video review.

Chelsea star Jessie Felmier rose to the challenge and ensured that her side went a goal up after the spot kick.

The US women’s team have four Olympic gold medals in their cabinet. They had been favourites to win the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Against Cananda, they came close to scoring an equaliser when Carli Lloyd’s header hit the bar. This was their first loss to neighbours Canada in over 20 years. In 62 head to head meeting between the two nations, Canada have defeated US only four times.

For Cananda, this is their first appearance in an Olympics football final.

“It has been a long time coming to beat those guys,” Fleming said after the match.

“We want to come away with gold now but it is really special for us to put our flag on the map,” she added.

Sweden had lost the final at Rio Olympics to Germany and would be looking to make amends this time. The final will take place on Friday.
