Sara Carbonero’s ex-husband, Iker Casillas on Sunday tweeted that he is gay. In a now-deleted post, the Real Madrid legend said,” I hope you respect me: I’m gay.” The 41-year-old was married to sports journalist Sara Carbonero between 2016 and 2021, and they have two children together. Casillas later clarified that his account was hacked, tweeting, “Hacked account. Luckily everything in order. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.”

Who is Sara Carbonera?

Sara Carbonero Arévalo is a Spanish-Portuguese sports journalist. She was born on February 3, 1984 in Corral de Almaguer, Spain. She travelled to Madrid to pursue a career in journalism at the Complutense University of Madrid. She began working at Radio Marca as an intern while she was a third-year journalism student at the university, and six months later she was hired in a full-time role.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Carbonero was reportedly accused of distracting Casillas by standing barely 60 yards from him and allowing Switzerland to score past her then-boyfriend. Casillas led Spain to their maiden title, and also won the Golden Gloves. 

She joined Telecinco as an editor and sports presenter in April 2009. Together with two friends, Carbonero founded the clothing business named ‘fast love’ in 2015, which sells apparel, accessories, and cosmetics online. She was also the host of a fashion TV programme, Quiero Ser (I Want to Be), on Telecinco, which premiered in July 2016.

From 2009 to 2021, Carbonero dated Iker Casillas, the Spanish goalkeeper and captain of Real Madrid. She gave birth to their son Martn in January 2014. When Casillas joined FC Porto in Portugal in July 2015, she shifted base along with him. The couple revealed they were expecting their second child in November 2015. On March 20, 2016, Casillas and Carbonero got married. The 38-year-old gave birth to the couple’s second child, Lucas, on June 2, 2016. After five years of marriage, Carbonero and Casillas announced their separation on March 12, 2021.

Carbonero underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from one of her ovaries in May 2019 and made a full recovery. She was once more hospitalised in February 2021, but has refused to divulge why she was admitted.
