The Georgetown University community was plunged into deep sorrow on Monday as news of the death of women’s basketball head coach Tasha Butts at the age of 41 spread rapidly.

Butts had valiantly battled breast cancer for the past two years, demonstrating remarkable resilience and unwavering determination in the face of the relentless disease. Her passing has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and the basketball fraternity at large.

Who is Tasha Butts?

Tasha Butts, beyond her identity as a talented basketball coach, was an embodiment of strength, resilience, and compassion. Her legacy transcends the boundaries of the sport, touching the lives of those she coached, played with, and inspired throughout her remarkable career. Athletic director Lee Reed eloquently summarized her remarkable character, underscoring Butts’ unparalleled drive, passion, and unwavering determination, both on the court and in her valiant battle against breast cancer.

Butts’ journey in the world of basketball began with her noteworthy stint as a player for the Minnesota Lynx in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Although her playing career did not soar to the heights she might have envisioned, her transition into coaching showcased her true prowess and dedication to the sport.

A graduate assistant at her alma mater, Tennessee, Butts’ coaching journey took her to LSU, where she served as an assistant from 2011 to 2019 before joining Georgia Tech in 2019. Her influence and expertise were further acknowledged when she was appointed as the associate head coach at Georgia Tech in 2021

Butts’ impact extended far beyond the confines of the basketball court. Her “Tasha Tough” campaign, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and generating funds to provide care for underprivileged women through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, exemplified her selflessness and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
