Coco Gauff, French Open runner-up this year, was knocked out of Wimbledon 2022 in the hands of Amanda Anisimova in the third round on the Centre Court Saturday. The latter won 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1.

The 18-year-old Gauff was seeded 11th at the All England Club. The 20th-seeded Anisimova has now reached the fourth round in three straight Grand Slam tournaments. The 20-year-old will next face Harmony Tan for a place in the quarterfinals.
An emotional Anisimova, after an high-quality affair, said that it is the most special day for her.

“This is the most special day of my career. It’s just a huge privilege to play on this court playing Coco. Winning is so special, especially in front of a full crowd — you guys were amazing,” Anisimova said after her win.
Gauff took the lead in the first set. Her compatriot then came back strong in the second. The pair were separated by a tiebreak which the former managed to ace before momentum quickly swung the other way.

“There are so many American players doing well and I’m proud of my country and how we have been doing. It was really exciting to have an all-American clash on this court so it was really special,” Anisimova added.
Anisimova, who won the US Open junior final between the duo five years ago, has made it to last 16 at the All England Club for the first time. Only earlier this year, she had knocked out four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka out of the French Open. She stunned the Japanese 2021 Australian Open champion in the first round, by winning in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) in an hour and 30 minutes.
