Wrestler
Babita Phogat on Wednesday stepped down from the position of deputy director of
Haryana’s Sports and Youth Affairs Department, citing “unavoidable reasons” behind
her move.

Phogat sent
her resignation to Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Department’s principal
secretary, PTI reported.

“Her
resignation letter was received today,” a senior official from the Department
told PTI.

In her resignation,
Phogat mentioned “unavoidable reasons” behind her move to discontinue the
service, despite joining recently.

Sources
close to the wrestler said she wanted to devote herself to active politics full
time. Phogat could not be contacted for comments.

She is slated
to take an active part in the campaigning for the Baroda bypoll in Sonipat and the upcoming Bihar election for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), family sources said.

Phogat had contested
the 2019 Haryana assembly polls from the Dadri constituency.

She is the
daughter of wrestling coach Mahavir Phogat.

The Phogats
became popular after the success of Aamir Khan’s “Dangal”, which is based on
the lives of the Phogat sisters and their father Mahavir, and chronicles the story behind their
success in the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
