United States President Donald Trump on Friday said that he will bar video sharing app TikTok from the US after American authorities raised concerns that the app’s services can be misused by Chinese intelligence, reported AFP.
Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One, “As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States.”
Earlier in the day, there were reports about the US President preparing an order requiring the fast-growing social media app TikTok to be divested from its Chinese parent firm on national security grounds.
Short-form video app TikTok, a wildly popular app with young audiences viewing, has an estimated billion users worldwide. Trump had earlier said, “We’re looking at Tiktok. We may be banning TikTok. We may be doing some other things,” he said. “There are a couple of options, but a lot of things are happening.”
In recent weeks, the US officials and lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential for TikTok being used by China for nefarious purposes, but the company has denied any links to the Beijing government.
