The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has over the years been providing different views of the universe, by releasing pictures captured by its telescopes. However, this time, the organisation, in a bid to evoke other senses, released a video that captures the sound of the universe.

“Hubble (telescope) brings us cosmic sights, but these astronomical marvels can be experienced with other senses as well. Through data sonification, the same digital data that gets translated into images is transformed into sound,” NASA wrote in a blog.

Watch the video here:

“Elements of the image, like brightness and position, are assigned pitches and volumes. Each translation below begins on the left side of the image and moves to the right. No sound can travel in space, but sonifications provide a new way of experiencing and conceptualising data. Sonifications allow the audience, including blind and visually impaired communities, to “listen” to astronomical images and explore their data,” NASA further explained.

A team at the Chandra X-ray Observatory, to demonstrate the process, combined their data with those from he Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope and created these sonifications, NASA said.
