The Democratic Convention, which was supposed to be held in July, was pushed ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic. The four-day presidential nominating convention will take place from August 17-20 at the Wisconsin Centre at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The city of Milwaukee currently has a 225 person limit on any gathering and hence the convention will mostly be held virtually. The event has been considerably downsized and moved to a smaller venue. Delegates have also been urged to stay away by party officials.

The convention will be streamed directly through the party’s social media platforms and it will also be available on the Democratic convention website. The event will also be aired on most US news channels.

Instead of the usual string of speakers who rev up the presumptive party candidate before they finally accept their nomination, the DNC this year has collected over 1,000 crowdsourced videos which will be showcased during the four-day event, said a BBC report. The DNC has also stated that segments to make voters more aware of the Biden campaign and where it stands on key issues will be aired during the event, this will be juxtaposed with the ‘chaos’ of the Trump presidency.

According to a BBC report, the DNC has said that measures are being taken to ensure that the convention viewers get a glimpse of participants from all 57 states and territories to connote the inclusivity and intersectional approach of the campaign.

Likewise, the Democratic convention website has stated that they are making sure that party delegates accomplish their official business without jeopardizing their health. The website claims “A process has been developed to ensure that all delegates can cast their nominating votes remotely during the convention, and DNC standing committees and caucus and council meetings will take place virtually in the weeks leading up to August 17.”

The website also stated that protecting the health and safety of everyone involved is their prime concern and added: “In addition to continued collaboration with local, state and federal public health officials, nationally-renowned epidemiologists and infectious disease experts Dr. W Ian Lipkin and Dr. Larry Brilliant are advising on efforts to protect the health and safety of everyone involved with convention and the people of Wisconsin.”

The presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden has already announced that he will accept his candidature from his home state of Delaware and V-P pick Kamala Harris will also accept her candidature remotely.

While the DNC has gone big with the promise of conducting the event remotely, the turn out for the event will be much less than the usually expected 50,000 plus people.

As the city of Milwaukee currently has a 225 person limit, only production crew may be allowed into the venue, reported television network WTMJ-TV.

A statutory warning for using masks, maintaining social distance measures, and undergoing daily tests have already been issued for the limited number of people who will attend the meet.

Former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders will address virtual crowds from their respective hometowns. Similarly, Jill Biden, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Bill Clinton will address the convention via video conferencing.
