With a dozen people typically sleeping in a single room, and hundreds using the same public toilet, authorities realised early that standard practices would be of little use.

Spread over an area of 2.1 square kilometers Dharavi is home to more than 10 lakh people. With a population density of 277,136  square kilometers, the area was a potential petri dish for the spread of coronavirus.
The slum has seen a total of 2,268 cases while more than 1,600 patients have made full recovery.
