Liverpool’s
lacklustre performance handed them a draw against Brighton and Hove Albion in
front of a packed home crowd at Anfield on Saturday. Liverpool’s defence, which
has looked bleak all season, meant that a brilliant double by Brazilian Roberto
Firmino and an unexpected own goal by Brighton’s Adam Webster (63) were still
not enough to pocket the win. Brighton’s prospects were brightened by  Belgian Leandro Trossard’s historic hattrick, which ensured that they went home with heads held high.

Chinks in
Liverpool’s armour were exposed as early as the fourth minute when a shot by Trossard waltzed past Alison Becker to give Brighton an early lead. Jurgen
Klopp’s strategies seemed to not have worked clearly as two other legitimate goal
attempts were stopped thanks only to last-moment brilliance by Liverpool’s
Brazilian goalie, Alisson Becker. However, it wasn’t long before Trossard broke
the reds’ hapless defence for a clean 2-0 headstart, barely 17 mins into the
match. However, Liverpool’s attack looked active with Roberto Firmino picking
up a difficult ball after out-manoeuvring 2 Brighton defenders for Liverpool’s maiden goal. He followed it up with a brilliant tackle which
eventually resulted in a goal in the 53rd minute to finally level
scores.

Things
were going Liverpool’s way after an unexpected own goal by Adam Webster
ensured that they went into the lead for the first time. With things looking
virtually sealed, it took a glimpse of greatness from the man of the moment
Trossard as he did not miss a direct shot, right into the goal. “Obviously it
is always nice if you can score but especially three at Anfield. We are disappointed
not to get a clean sheet but it’s good to get a point here. It’s always tough”
said Brighton’s talisman for the day, Leandro Trossard.

Liverpool
will have to seriously work up their defensive technique as individual
performances cannot lift a sinking ship over the course of a long season. At
the end of the day, Trossard’s brilliance was too good for even an unfortunate
self goal to hurt Brighton’s fortunes away from home.
