Several rarely seen beaked whales, which are usually found in deeper waters, have been spotted near the shore or even stranded, all in very quick succession. On July 19, off the coast of the Netherlands, as many as three beaked whales were present very close to a beach. The local residents had to step in to form a human barricade and ward the whales away from the shore. A giant stingray, weighing 660 pounds, has been caught in the Mekong River in Cambodia. Scientists believe it is the world’s largest recorded freshwater fish. A rare baby ghost shark that lives in shadowy depths of the ocean has been discovered by scientists in New Zealand, the BBC reported. The baby ghost shark was spotted at a depth of 1.2 kilometers off the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. The species are rarely spotted and are also known as Chimaera. Scientists said that the spotting of a ghost shark baby is even rarer as they hatch from eggs laid on the seafloor. Dr Brit Finucci, a member of the team, called it a “neat find”, and added that the discovery was made by accident. She works as a fisheries scientist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research and she said that the baby ghost shark normally hatches from egg capsules laid on the seafloor. The first glimpse of an exceptionally uncommon pink handfish in more than 20 years was captured on film off the coast of Tasmania, Australia. Parks Australia and the University of Tasmania conducted a survey of the Tasman Fracture Marine Park, which is located off Tasmania's south west coast. Surveying is a fantastic way of understanding which species live in the region and getting an idea of which animals are common and rare in these remote and inhospitable environments, according to Associate Professor Neville Barrett, one of the marine biologists leading the e,In a statement, he said, The biggest surprise was in finding a pink handfish in the park at a depth of around 120 metres [390 feet]. Until this sighting, the species had only ever been recorded four times and was listed as a rare species under Tasmania's Threatened Species Act earlier this year, he added. While examining footage from a remote, underwater camcorder utilised during the study, researchers discovered the pink handfish, Brachiopsilus dianthus. This type of fish was last sighted 22 years ago by a diver off the coast of the Tasman Peninsula. The Tasman Fracture Marine Park is a protected maritime area that stretches over 16,400 square miles deep into the Southern Ocean. It has steep canyons, troughs, seamounds, and basins and is about 20,000 feet deep at its deepest point. Along these characteristics, deep water corals can be found, providing habitats for a wide variety of fish and marine invertebrates. The pink handfish is seen in the video to the right of the screen, somewhat obscured by seaweed. The baited camera, which two rock lobsters are battling over, drew it in. The pink handfish swims away when a third lobster is added to the mix. This is an exciting discovery and offers hope for the ongoing survival of pink handfish, as clearly they have a wider habitat and distribution than previously thought, Barrett said. This was the second mission in a series to track changes in the water on the shelf, which has been protected since 2007. The research team looks forward to finding more handfish and other unusual species in this area in the future, as part of ongoing collaborative studies supported by Parks Australia, he said.
