Biplab Deb, the Tripura chief minister’s resignation on Saturday may have come as a surprise for the state, but is not a new move for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In state after state, the BJP has changed chief ministers right before the polls. Only last year, the BJP changed CMs in Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Karnataka. ,Deb, 50, became Tripura CM in 2018 by defeating the Manik Sarkar-led Left Front government that had ruled Tripura for 25 years. With one year to go before Assembly elections, and mounting opposition from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, the BJP decided Deb had to go. It is only when the organisation is strong, will there be government.” ,BJP’s strategy to change CMs on the eve of polls is often regarded as an attempt to offset anti-incumbency. In Gujarat, Narendra Modi’s state that goes to polls later this year, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had to resign and make way for Bhupendra Patel in September, 2021. ,Uttarakhand, which went to polls earlier this year and saw the BJP return to power with a majority, also changed CMs months before the polls. Tirath Singh Rawat resigned after just four months in power to make way for Pushkar Singh Dhami who returned with a thumping majority. In Karnataka, the removal of BS Yeddyurappa came with its own set of political challenges. The only southern state with a BJP government, Narendra Modi’s party had to tread lightly so as to not alter demographic balances. The party came up with Basavaraj Bommai, who has been leading the state through a particularly turbulent time over communal troubles. ,Biplab Deb is being replaced by Manik Saha, Tripura BJP chief and a member of the Rajya Sabha. The 69-year-old dental surgeon-turned-CM said, “I was a common worker of the party and will continue to be so.” ,Biplab Deb congratulated Manik Saha saying, “Congratulations and best wishes to @DrManikSaha2 ji on being elected as the legislature party leader. I believe under PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision and leadership Tripura will prosper.”

Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on Wednesday and retained his position after the Bharatiya Janta Party won the recent Assembly elections in the state. The ceremony was at the Parade Ground, Dehradun. Dhami was groomed by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh before coming into mainstream politics. After almost three decades of his association with RSS as a volunteer, the ideological guide of BJP, he ascended to the top position of the Uttarakhand state assembly. He had worked as an ABVP leader between 1990 and 1999 while studying at the Lucknow University before the state of Uttarakhand was formed. Dhami’s first official assignment came in 2002 when he was appointed by the state’s second chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari, as his officer on special duty (OSD). In 2002, as BJP lost the first state elections, he became the first president of Uttarakhand BJP’s Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) for two consecutive terms from 2002-2008. Pushkar Singh Dhami will continue as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced on Monday, ending the 11-day suspense over who will become the state's next CM. ,The announcement was made after a legislative party meeting at the party's office on Balbir Road in Dehradun. The meeting to elect the new CM had begun here around 5 pm and was attended by BJP's central observers for Uttarakhand Rajnath Singh, Meenakshi Lekhi and the party's poll incharge for the state, Pralhad Joshi. Pushkar Singh Dhami has been elected as the Leader of the Legislative Party. I congratulate him, I am confident that under his leadership Uttarakhand will make rapid progress, Rajnath Singh told reporters. The names of Chaubattakhal MLA Satpal Maharaj, Shrinagar MLA Dhan Singh Rawat and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni were also doing the rounds for the top post. ,BJP had contested the February 14 Assembly polls in Uttarakhand under Dhami's leadership. ,The party registered a big win in Uttarakhand, getting 47 out of a total of seventy assembly seats in the state, the results of which were announced on March 10. ,Dhami lost in Khatima, a seat he had been winning since the 2012 Assembly polls, putting the party in a dilemma on the CM choice. ,A section of BJP leaders, however, credited him for the party's big win in the state Assembly polls and wanted him to continue as CM so that he gets a full five-year term to deliver on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of development for the state.
