Now known as the doomsday cult mom, Lori Vallow Daybell will not face the death penalty if she is found guilty of the murder of her two children, JJ Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan,16.

She faces two counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges with her husband, Chad Daybell. The remains of the two children were found buried in Chad Daybell’s backyard.

When JJ’s grandmother requested a welfare check on her grandson, the police found that both JJ and Tylee were missing. When the police reached the Daybell residence with a search warrant, they realised the couple had left for Hawaii.

With a nationwide manhunt ensuing for the children, there were no signs from Lori Vallow. Finally, when the couple returned the following year, Lori Vallow was ordered to produce her children before the court. When Lori failed to do so, she was arrested on 20th February 2020.

Lori Vallow’s trial is set to start on 4th April, 2023. While the court expressed its intent to seek the death penalty on 2nd May last year, that decision was stricken by the Fremont County District Judge.

This was followed after the defence had filed a motion this March seeking the dismissal of the state’s intent to carry out a death sentence. Their reasonings included discovery violations of the government, Lori Vallow’s mental condition, and media saturation. On 21st March, the court ruled in favour of the motion.

The case has previously been criticised for its procedural mistakes, such as the prosecutors’ late disclosure, thereby giving the defence less time to prepare. However, Judge Boyce was clear during an oral hearing that the motion to remove the death sentence does not penalise the state in any way.

Lori Vallow had grown increasingly obsessed with Chad Daybell’s books on doomsday cults and the world’s end.
